Looking to finish the season strong, the Nipissing Lakers women's volleyball team faced some stiff competition this weekend, in their lone match.
The Lakers hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night, looking for the upset.
In the end, it was the blues, who came away with a 3-1 victory.
Toronto started strong, leading the opening set 16-6 at the technical timeout.
They extended the lead 21-10 and held off a late charge by the Lakers to claim the first set 25-16 and move up 1-0.
Nipissing bounced back early in the second set, leading 7-1.
They stayed ahead at the technical timeout, pushing their lead to 16-10, as they looked to even the match up.
Toronto fought back to close the gap, but the Lakers held on and won the second set 25-23 to tie the match.
With the match tied 1-1, the third set would prove pivotal.
Toronto jumped out to a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout and outscored Nipissing 9-8 down the stretch to come away with the win and grab the advantage in the match.
Nipissing looked to fight back in the fourth set, down 2-1, but Toronto wouldn't let the Lakers gain any momentum.
The Blues led 11-7 early and held a lead of 16-10 at the midway break.
From there, the Blues sealed the win, defeating the Lakers 25-15 in the fourth set.
Toronto came away with a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Lakers, who battled right until the end.
Nipissing will wrap up the regular season next weekend when they face Trent Sunday afternoon.
Match time is set for 2pm at the Surtees Athletic Centre.
