Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team was poised for a long playoff run after one of the best seasons in the program's history.
Entering the post-season as the number two seed, the Lakers hosted the York Lions in the OUA quarter-finals Wednesday night at Nipissing Field.
A lone goal midway through the second half turned out to be enough, as the Lakers controlled the game and picked up a 1-0 win to advance to the OUA semi-finals, set for this weekend.
In the opening 45 minutes, the Lakers came out strong, generating a number of chances and putting on a lot of pressure thanks to some great ball movement.
On two separate occasions, Nipissing was inches away from taking the lead.
Jennifer Milligan rifled a shot just wide, on the rush and another chance rattled off both posts, but stayed out.
York did push back late in the half, but the teams closed out the opening period tied 0-0.
In the second, it was much of the same for the first 15 minutes, with the Lakers controlling the chances and opportunities, but failing to find the back of the net.
The breakthrough for Nipissing came in the 74th minute when Jen Milligan buried her shot into the far corner of the net, giving the Lakers a much-deserved lead.
Milligan's tally stood up as the lone goal of the game and all the Lakers would need to claim the victory and advance in their quest for an OUA title.
Mykaela Volpe was as strong as ever, finishing with just two saves, but controlled the backline very well throughout the 90 minutes.
The Lakers will now host the league semi-finals, set for Saturday at noon here in North Bay.
