In conjunction with Black History Month, Nipissing Lakers Athletics is proud to announce the launch of this year's #NUnity campaign.

Through the newly created student initiative, NUBASE (Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression), the goal of this group and initiative is to bring awareness to equality, diversity and inclusion, as well as the social, systemic and racial injustice that continue to plague society.

During the course of Black History Month and into the future, the main objectives of NUBASE are to continue the conversation about anti-racism, social equality and show support for black students at Nipissing University, as well as maintaining cultural diversity.

Black History Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn about the many contributions black Canadians have made to Canada.

The importance of Black History Month is at the forefront of NUBASE and their objectives, however, equally important is using the momentum of this month to confront the issues of racism and social inequality.

"We are extremely excited and humbled to launch our new club in conjunction with NUSU. It was essential for us to pair up with the athletic department because of our connection to sport. All members of our executive team are currently involved with varsity athletics, extending our impacts beyond athletic success and serving as another example of being more than an athlete. With that said, we are welcoming all students to join us in creating a supportive network for black students on campus and those who will be here in the future," the NUBASE executive said. "The #NUnity campaign will be one of many joint initiatives with our athletic department and we are appreciative of all the support we've received so far. While we celebrate Black History Month, we also need to remain eternally vigilant in the fight against racism and discrimination. As part of the initiative and newly formed group, a number of events and presentations have been planned."

They will begin with a series of educational pieces throughout the month of February, honouring a number of black trailblazers from different walks of life.
