The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team kicked off their 2021 CUFLA season in style this past weekend.
Beginning an historic season, where they'll host the Baggataway Cup, the Lakers picked up a dominant win, defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs 21-2.
The win gives the Lakers a 1-0 record and gives Nipissing a 1-0 lead in the 705 Challenge Cup, as well.
In their first game in 688 days, the Lakers were led by a fast start and a record setting day from veteran
Scott Dominey.
Dominey posted 13 points – eight goals and 5 assists – to lead the way.
Davis Prince added eight points,
Will Craig had six,
Carter Tait and
Ryley Ruff each had three, Zach Tarr and
Bo Peltier had two and
Jesse Ashkewe,
Quinn Young and
Kaleb Fulkerson all added a single.
Craig had four goals of his six points, Tait had a hat-trick and Prince added a pair.
The Lakers put up eight in the first quarter and six in the second to lead 14-0 at halftime.
They locked things down in the second half, posting seven more goals while surrendering just two in the fourth quarter.
For Nipissing, every player on our offence was able to get on the scorecard, while they had an outstanding performance by our freshman face-off man, Kaleb Faulkerson, who went 16-0 at the face-off circle.
On the defensive side, the team was strong only allowing two goals.
Up next, the Lakers head to Peterborough to face the Trent Excalibur on Saturday night.
Trent began the season with a 10-3 victory, so the winner of this weekend's game will take early control of the division, being undefeated through two weeks of play.
Game time is set for 7pm.
