Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team began their season in style, picking up a big victory over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs Friday night.
Nipissing used a five goal first half to build up a lead, as they cruised toa 7-0 win to take the first leg of the Riley Gallo Cup and give the Lakers a 2-0 lead in the 705 Challenge Cup.
The Lakers didn't waste anytime getting on the scoreboard, finding the back of the net just six minutes into the game.
Ashley Mlinaric scored her first of two, as she would add another goal at the 21-minute mark.
In between Mlinaric's pair, Jen Milligan buried her first at the 18-minute mark to put Nipissing up two.
Mlinaric made it 3-0, before Jess Emmerton scored twice prior to the halftime break to give Nipissing a 5-0 lead after 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Lakers locked things down, but still managed to add a pair of goals to extend their lead.
Emily Tierney in the 52nd minute and
Sabrina Chabot late in the game rounded out the scoring for the Lakers.
Mykaela Volpe wasn't tested, aside from a few loose balls in her crease and picked up the shutout win.
The teams are back on the pitch Sunday in Sudbury, as they play the second of their home-and-home series.
Game time is set for 1pm.
