Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team is off to a perfect 2-0 start thanks to a strong weekend on the road.
The Lakers defeated the York Lions 5-2 Friday night, before wrapping up their weekend with a 4-1 win over the TMU Bold Saturday in Toronto.
The Lakers didn't trail at any point throughout the weekend on their way to six points.
Nipissing jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play Friday.
Maria Dominico scored the team's first goal of the season, while
Lana Duriez potted her first career goal just minutes later.
Ashlyn Zaharia,
Emma Neff, Malory Dominco and
Maggie McKee would all pick up assists on the two goals.
The teams traded goals in the middle frame.
York cut into the Lakers lead, but
Ashley Taciuk would restore the two-goal cushion just over a minute later.
Kara den Hoed and
Madison Laberge picked up helpers on Taciuk's first of the year.
The teams combined for three goals in the third, with the Lions getting back into the game again before Nipissing pulled away.
After York made it 3-2,
Maddison Stitt scored the insurance marker, set up by Dominic and Laberge.
Katie Chomiak would seal the game late in the third, with Neff picking up her second assist on the game.
Chantelle Sandquist picked up the win in net, finishing with 21 saves.
In the second game of the weekend, the Lakers jumped out to a very quick start, going up 3-0 in the first period.
Laberge and Chomiak with a pair, all scored in the opening frame.
Stitt,
Madison Desmarais and
Tessa Kosec earned assists on the first two goals, while Malory Dominco added to her strong weekend and Laberge grabbed her second point of the game.
After a scoreless second period, the teams traded goals in the third.
TMU broke the shutout late in the game before
Malory Dominico sealed the win with her third point of the weekend.
Chloe Marshall picked up the win, making 26 saves.
Next up, the Lakers are at home, hosting the Windsor Lancers Friday night and the Western Mustangs Saturday.
Both games are scheduled for 7pm at Memorial Gardens.
