Box Score A night after a thrilling victory in their home opener against the Windsor Lancers Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was looking to make it not only a perfect weekend, but a perfect start to the season both on the road and at home.
The Lakers were 3-0-0 - two wins on the road and Friday's on home ice - entering Saturday's contest against the visiting Western Mustangs and while it took a late goal to tie it and some extra time, the Lakers came away with a tight 2-1 overtime win.
The opening 20 minutes was a relatively low-event period and while both teams had a few chances, there wasn't much to report in the way of highlights.
Western outshot Nipissing 7-4, but neither team was able to find the back of the net and went to the break tied 0-0.
In the middle frame, the Lakers had a golden opportunity in the first few minutes, being awarded a 5-on-3 power play after a pair of early Western infractions.
Despite pressure, the Lakers were unable to convert and the score remained tied early in the second.
The back and forth continued, but neither team was able to sustain much pressure in the offensive zone and neither was able to generate any clear scoring chances.
Western was first on the board and able to break the deadlock, finding the back of the net with 7:22 left in the second, going up 1-0.
Through 40 minutes in a quiet game offensively, the Mustangs' second period marker stood up as the only goal and they took a one goal lead into the third.
Shots favoured Nipissing 10-9 after two periods.
It took almost half the third - and 50 minutes in total - but the Lakers finally got on the board.
Madison Desmarais took a slick feed from
Maria Dominico and shovelled the puck into the net to tie the game at one.
The Lakers third period goal was enough to send the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, it didn't take long for the Lakers to claim the win.
Malory Dominico made no mistake, finishing the game in style and giving the Lakers a 2-1 win.
Chloe Marshall finished with 13 saves in the victory, while the Lakers had 20 shots of their own.
Next up, the Lakers remain on home ice to take on the York Lions next Friday night.
Game time is set for 7pm at Memorial Gardens.
