The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team finished with a weekend split, but in the process, earned their first win over the season on the road.
The Lakers defeated the Ottawa Gee Gees 10-17 Saturday night, before falling to the Queen's Gaels Sunday afternoon by a final of 11-6.
The Lakers used a big second quarter against Ottawa and held on for the victory, while a slow start hurt them in their loss to the Gaels.
Saturday in Ottawa, after trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, Nipissing broke out with five goals in the second frame, taking a 6-2 lead into the halftime break.
From there, they managed to hold on, despite being outscored 5-4 in the second half.
The strong effort gave the team their first win of the season.
Zach Tarr led the way with four goals and an assist,
Dalton King added a hat-trick, while
Carter Tait,
Rohan Croisdale and Conner Nevin all added singles in the win.
On Sunday, the Lakers started slow and found themselves down 8-2 at halftime.
They fought back in the second half, outscoring the Gaels 4-3, but it wasn't enough, as they came up short in the end, falling by a final of 11-6.
Tait had a big game, scoring four times, while Nevin and
Quinn Harding each buried a goal of their own.
Up next, the Lakers host a pair of games, this Friday and Sunday.
Nipissing hosts the Trent Excalibur Friday night at 7pm and the McGill Redbirds Sunday at Noon – both on the Nipissing Turf Field in North Bay.
