WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS PICK UP FIRST VICTORY BY OUTLASTING TORONTO

Box Score Kicking off a four game homestand to close out the first semester of play, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team hit the court Friday night.

The Lakers hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues, as Nipissing searches for their first win of the season.

In a historic win, as head coach Rachel Van Woezik earned her first win as head coach, along with the team's first win of the season, the Lakers toppled the Blues 76-68.

The teams put on a show early, playing an exciting and competitive opening quarter.

Nipissing jumped out to an early lead thanks to some strong shooting and rebounding.

The Lakers were up a point, 17-16, after the first 10 minutes.

Toronto replied in the second quarter, taking the momentum away from the Lakers.

At the break, the Lakers trailed the Blues 36-34.

A big third quarter saw the Lakers jump ahead of the Blues and out in front, 62-50.

In that third, Nipissing outscored Toronto 28-14, posting a monster quarter to take the lead into the fourth.

The Blues stormed back to start the fourth and began the quarter on a 14-4 run to close the gap to two points midway through.

The Lakers flipped the script, however, dominating the second half of the fourth quarter, outscoring Toronto 14-4 down the stretch to stay out in front and claim the victory.

Krystal Osburn had a huge game, posting 20 points, Nicole Budd added 13 and Kylea Galipeau-Wilson had 12 in the Lakers victory.

Up next, the Lakers host the TMU Bold Saturday night to wrap up the weekend.

Tip-off is set for 6pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
