Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team is coming off a thrilling, last-second win Friday night, looking to make it a perfect weekend as they close out the first half of the season.
The Lakers defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night and hosted the Waterloo Warriors Saturday, having won two of their past three games.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, they had to settle for the weekend split, falling 65-57 to a strong Warriors team Saturday night in North Bay.
Waterloo got off to a dominant start, leading 9-0 early and were in complete control of the game.
Nipissing fought back, but still trailed by 10 midway through the quarter, down 16-6, before they closed the gap late.
They went on a 9-5 run to close out the first and were down 21-15 after 10 minutes.
The Lakers stayed hot early in the second, continuing to erase their deficit and had the game within one, 21-20.
Waterloo responded and led 26-20 early in the second and 28-23 midway through the second.
The Warriors closed out the half strong, outscoring the Lakers 10-4 down the stretch to take an 11 point lead into the halftime break, up 38-27.
In the third, the Warriors were able to extend their lead by posting 19 points and going up 57-42 after 30 minutes of play.
Nipissing posted 15 points of their own, but were unable to close the gap.
Nipissing did all they could in the fourth, pouring it on and coming back, chipping away at their deficit.
They outscored Waterloo 15-8 in the quarter, getting the game within eight, but they ran out of time, falling by a final of 65-57
Megan McCarter led the #Lakers with 17 points,
Sarah Pallett added 11 and
Nicole Budd chipped in with nine in the contest.
Saturday's game wraps up the first half of the season for Nipissing.
The Lakers will be back in action in the New Year.
