Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team showed a lot of resilience this past weekend, as they finished with a weekend split, but in the process, picked up their first victory of the season.
The Lakers dropped the weekend opener to the Toronto Varsity Blues by a final of 75-52, before bouncing back to claim a 64-60 win on Saturday night and leave Toronto with a 1-1 record.
While they hung around in the first game, Nipissing got off to a bit of a slow start as they trailed 23-16 after the first quarter.
Scoring just eight points in the second quarter, Nipissing found themselves down 38-24 at the break.
A tough third quarter sealed their fate and while they outscored Toronto in the fourth by four, it was too little, too late.
Angeline Campbell had a strong night with 16 points and five rebounds to lead the way.
Saturday's contest was almost the opposite of Friday, as it was the Lakers who got off to a strong start and controlled the opening half.
Nipissing led 18-10 after one and 40-24 at the halftime break.
Toronto pushed in the second half, outscoring the Lakers 36-24, but Nipissing's lead was too much to come back from, as the Lakers held on for the victory.
Four Lakers hit double digits, led by
Nicole Budd's 18 points.
Megan McCarter added 16, Campbell scored another 13 and
Finnley McElwain chipped in with 11 in the triumph.
Up next, the Lakers face the Laurentian Voyageurs in a home-and-home, beginning Thursday in Sudbury, with the rematch set for Saturday at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
