Box Score Wednesday evening was a showdown between two of the top teams in not only the OUA, but also in all of USports.
The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team hit the road to take on the country's top team, the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, they had their three game winning streak snapped, as they fell 4-1 to the Blues.
In the opening period, the Blues started strong, scoring just a minute into the contest.
Despite a number of shots, the first would end with just the one goal, as the Blues held the lead after 20 minutes of play.
Toronto would double their lead just over two minutes into the second, as the teams combined for three goals in the middle frame.
At 2:36, the Blues would go up 2-0 thanks to a power play marker.
Nipissing would get back into the game shortly after the midway mark of the second period as
Malory Dominico would find the back of the net.
The even strength tally was set up by
Maggie McKee, who has been on a hot streak lately and veteran
Jetta Derenoski, who hasn't missed a beat since rejoining the team.
Toronto would regain their two goal lead just a minute after the Lakers goal, however, scoring their second power play goal of the night.
With the score 3-1 after 40 minutes, Toronto would score the lone goal of the third to seal the win and remain undefeated in regulation.
With the loss, Nipissing drops to 7-2-0 on the season.
Toronto outshot Nipissing 35-33, as
Chantelle Sandquist suffered the loss in net, despite 31 saves.
The reigning USports athlete of the week, Erica Freyer, finished with 32 saves in the victory for Toronto.
The Lakers are back in action Wednesday afternoon, as they continue their mini road trip to Oshawa to take on Ontario Tech.
Game time is set for 1:30pm.
