Box Score The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team is heating up at the right time.
In a mid-week matchup, the Lakers edged the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 3-2, thanks to an outstanding performance in net from Michael Herringer, who finished with 38 saves.
After Wednesday night's victory, the Lakers have now won four straight and improved their record to 7-5-0 and in the process, jumping the Ridgebacks into second place in the OUA East Division.
After a scoreless opening period, the teams traded goals in the middle frame, with the Ridgebacks striking first less than a minute past the halfway mark.
That score only last four minutes, however, as the Lakers tied things up thanks to
Charles Farmer, who scored his first of the season.
Parker Bowman and
Matt Paul picked up helpers on the tying goal.
The teams headed to the dressing room after 40 minutes, all tied up at one, as both teams looked for their seventh win of the season.
In the third, the Lakers struck twice in a span of two and a half minutes to take a 3-1 lead in the second half of the period.
First,
Jacob Hickey continued his tear, burying his sixth of the campaign.
Paul grabbed his second assist and
Payton Vescio earned the other helper.
Just 2:31 late, Nipissing expanded their lead thanks to Farmer's second of the game.
Mathieu Franche had the lone assist on what turned out to be the game-winner.
Ontario Tech would climb within one late in the period, but the Lakers held on for the regulation win and a key two points.
The Lakers were outshot 40-28, but Herringer's heroics allowed them to grab the win.
Nipissing will look to make it five in a row when they host the strong Queen's Gaels Saturday afternoon.
Puck drop is set for 3:30pm at Memorial Gardens.
