Box Score After suffering only their second and third losses of the season this past week, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was looking to get back on track Wednesday night on home ice.
The Lakers hosted the Ryerson Rams in their first of a pair of home games this week, as they also host the York Lions Thursday at 5pm.
After a slight delay to start the game, the Lakers overcame a slow start and controlled much of the game, skating to a 5-4 victory in overtime over the Rams.
In the opening period, both teams had chances on the power play early on and the Lakers peppered the Rams net, finishing with 16 shots, but it was the Rams who struck first on the rush.
They went up 1-0 with just less than five minutes remaining in the period on just their fourth shot.
Despite the big advantage in shots, the Lakers trailed after the opening period of play.
In the middle frame, the Rams doubled their lead, scoring just ahead of the five minute mark.
The Lakers answered back seven minutes into the period, as
Marilyn Fortin found the back of the net to cut the Nipissing deficit in half.
Ashley Taciuk grabbed the lone assist on the Lakers' first goal of the game.
With 8:30 left in the period, the Lakers tied things up thanks to some strong pressure and a 2-on-1.
Maria Dominico held on until the last minute, then roofed the puck, going off the post and in to make it 2-2.
Just two minutes later, the Lakers took the lead, as veteran
Jetta Derenoski hammered home a centering pass.
Maggie McKee made a perfect pass out front and Derenoski made no mistake, giving the Lakers their first lead of the contest.
Malory Dominico grabbed the other helper on the goal.
Nipissing continued to pour it on in the middle period, as Derenoski buried her second of the game in almost the exact same way she scored just minutes a go.
McKee put the puck on a platter and Derenoski blasted it to the back of the net.
Malory Dominico grabbed the other assist on the Lakers fourth goal, as the trio all picked up their second point of the game.
A dominant second period saw the Lakers fired another 13 shots on the Rams net and score four times to take a 4-2 advantage into the second intermission.
Neither team managed much offence in the third until the dying minutes when the Rams tallied twice on the power play.
The first goal came with 1:24 left and cut the Lakers lead to just one and the Rams tied the game with just nine seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
After the late game drama, the overtime saw chances at both ends it was
Brianna Gaffney that ended it for the Lakers.

Maria Dominico and went to the backend, making no mistake to give Nipissing the win and extra point.
Chloe Marshall grabbed the win in net, finishing 14 saves, while Nipissing ended up with 38Â of their own.
Up next, Nipissing is back in action hosting the Lions tomorrow night.
