Box Score A night after getting back into the win column, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team made it two wins in a row.
The Lakers topped the visiting York Lions by a final of 6-1 Thursday night, picking up their second win of the week and improving to 9-3-0 on the season.
There was just one goal to report in the opening frame, as Nipissing jumped ahead 1-0 thanks to
Maria Dominico's ninth tally of the season.
Brianna Gaffney and
Madison Laberge drew the assists on the opening goal.
The shots were even at 12-12 in a fairly wide open period.
The teams combined for three goals in the second period
Nipissing went up 2-0 on
Ashlyn Zaharia's second of the season, with Madison Desmerais and
Katie Chomiak earning helpers as the Lakers doubled their lead.
The Lions would respond five minutes later, shorthanded, to cut the Nipissing lead in half.
Nipissing would regain their two goal lead just past the midway mark of the period, as
Jetta Derenoski continued her strong play, burying her fourth goal of the season and third in the last two nights.
Britney Zack picked up the assist to put the Lakers up 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Shots favoured the Lions 18-17 after two periods of play.
In the third, Dominico tallied her second of the game, making a slick move and finding the back of the net five and a half minutes into the period.
The North Bay native has now hit double digits, with her 10th goal of the year.
Maggie McKee picked up the assist, as she continues to be a strong playmaker for the Lakers, earning her third assist this week and seventh in the past six games.
Nipissing continued to pour it on in the third as
Katie Chomiak scored a power play marker with 8:14 remaining in the period to put the Lakers up 5-1.
McKee once again set up the goal, along with
Malory Dominico, who had the assists.
Another power play goal put the Lakers up 6-1 late in the period.
Gaffney, who is having a very strong season offensively tallied the goal, with assists going to
Allison Hayhurst and
Maria Dominico, who grabbed her third point of the night.
Chantelle Sandquist grabbed the victory in net, turning aside 25 shots, while Nipissing finished with 26 of their own directed at the Lions cage.
Up next, the Lakers head to Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams Saturday afternoon.
Game time is set for 4pm.
