Box Score After a tough loss Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team looked to get back into the win column Saturday in a rematch with the Queen's Gaels.
The Lakers hung tough against one of the OUA's stronger teams, but came up short in the first of two meetings and on Saturday, they stumbled down the stretch and came up short again, losing 83-58.
In the first quarter, the Lakers ran the court well and were committed at both ends of the court, but still trailed – only by one – after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second, the Gaels extended their lead to six points, as they went up 28-22 in the middle of the quarter.
They finished the half strong and led by 11 – 40-29 – at the break.
After a fairly strong opening half, the Lakers ran out of gas in third, as the Gaels poured on the offence, taking an 11 point lead and jumping out to a 25 point advantage after three quarters.
In the final quarter, the Gaels continued to push and led 80-50 and cruised to the 83-58 triumph.
The Gaels capped off the weekend sweep with the win, defeating the Lakers on back-to-back nights.
Leading the way offensively for Nipissing was
Angeline Campbell, scoring 11 points, while
Natalie Martinez added eight and three others chipped in with seven.
The Lakers host the powerful Ottawa Gee Gees next weekend for a pair of games – Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
