Box Score On a special night for more than one reason, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team welcomed the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks to the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.

The Lakers were hosting their first ever Shoot For Change Anti-Racism game, in partnership with the Ridgebacks and created by NUBASE co-founder and president, as well as Lakers men's basketball team member, Taijon Graham.

While the off-court event was important, on the court, it was the Ridgebacks who came away with a tight 72-66 victory.

The teams played a fast, offensive opening first quarter with Ridgebacks finishing the first up 23-16.

A much lower scoring second quarter saw the teams combined for just 19 points, but the Ridgebacks did extend their lead by five, outscoring Nipissing 12-7.

After 20 minutes, the Lakers trailed 35-23, with the second half ahead.

The Lakers picked up their play in the third quarter, but Ontario Tech stepped up their game and were actually able to extend the lead, outscoring the Lakers 23-16 in the third.

Nipissing put together a dominant fourth quarter, erasing deficit of 19 points to climb within three at one point in the final few minutes of the game.

Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, as Ontario Tech clamped things down in the end, securing the win.

Angeline Campbell and Finnley McElwain had big games, scoring 16 points each, Devisha Binns added 14 and Megan McCarter scored 11 in the contest.

The teams play the rematch and season-finale Sunday in Oshawa.

Game time is set for 4pm at Ontario Tech.
