WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS SUFFER HEARTBREAK IN OUA FINALS; FALL 2-1 TO BROCK

Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team finally got their chance to host the OUA McCaw Cup championship.

After a number of years being close and a trip to the finals in 2017 at Guelph, the Lakers hosted the Brock Badgers in the title contest.

Unfortunately, the Badgers spoiled what was a great atmosphere.

Thanks to a pair of second period goals, the Badgers came out on top, winning the 2021-22 McCaw Cup by a final of 2-1.

The first period had a great pace and a few chances, but nothing to report in terms of offence.

Shots read 6-6 after 20 minutes of play.

Early in the second, the Lakers ran into penalty trouble, going down two players just under five minutes in.

The Lakers managed to kill off the first penalty, but Brock struck up one player to go up 1-0, five and a half minutes into the middle frame.

Cassidy Maplethorpe fired home the game's opening goal.

The Badgers doubled their lead just before the midway mark of the period thanks to another power play marker.

Paige Cohoon picked up Brock's second tally.

After 40 minutes, thanks to a pair of goals, the Badgers lead 2-0.

Shots are 20-12 in favour of Brock.

Less than a minute into the third period, the Lakers got on the board thanks to Brianna Gaffney, who has been a scoring machine this season and the playoffs.

Her fourth goal of the post-season, assisted by Jetta Derenoski, put the Lakers within one.

A late push saw the Lakers throw everything they had at the Badgers net, but nothing found its way in, as Brock came away with the win and the OUA title.

Chloe Marshall finished with 22 saves, while the Lakers fired 20 shots of their own at the Badgers net.

Both teams will now hop on a plane and head east to PEI for USports Nationals, which begin late next week.
