Box Score One was the magic number Thursday night in Charlottetown.
The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team is advancing to the USports Women's Hockey National semi-finals thanks to a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in their quarter-final matchup.
The story of the game was very obvious – goaltending.
Lakers goalie
Chloe Marshall stood on her head, making 41 saves for the shutout win, while her counterpart for UBC, Elise Hugens, finished with 26, but allowed the game's only goal in the extra period.
After 60-plus minutes of hockey, veteran defender
Madison Solie took a pass from behind the net and blasted one to the back of the net, sending her team over the boards to celebrate and sending them to the next round.
With the win, the Lakers will now play for a medal.
The colour of that medal will be determined Saturday in the semi-finals, where they'll face the UNB Varsity Reds, who won their quarter-final in dramatic fashion as well.
They erased a 4-1 deficit to upend the McGill Marlets 5-4 in a shootout.
Saturday's showdown is set for 3pm (ET) and 4pm (AT).
