WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS FALL TO POWERFUL GEE GEES FRIDAY NIGHT

Box Score With the season winding down, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team was looking to finish strong.

On Friday, the Lakers welcomed the Ottawa Gee Gees to town for a pair of games at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.

In the opening matchup of the weekend, the Gee Gees proved to be too much for the Lakers, as they defeated Nipissing 88-43.

The Lakers started strong and got off to a quick start, building up a 12-7 lead.

Ottawa took about eight minutes to get their feet under them and took off offensively from there, scoring the next 13 points for a 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Gee Gees continued to distance themselves from the Lakers, going up 33-14 midway through the second quarter.

At the halftime break, the Lakers trailed Ottawa 45-17, needing a big second half to get back into the game.

The second half wasn't kind to the Lakers, as they were in tough against a dominant Gee Gees team.

Ottawa extended their lead to 72-31 after 30 minutes of play and were cruising to the win.

The teams played out the final 10 minutes, as the Lakers looked to at least go out on a high note and in the process, they did manage to hang tough with the Gee Gees down the stretch.

But the gap was too much to mount a comeback, as the Lakers dropped the decision.

Devisha Binns led the Lakers with 10 points and Angeline Campbell added nine in the contest.

The two teams are back at Saturday afternoon, with tip-off set for 2pm at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre.
