Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team earned a weekend split on the road, improving to 4-8 on the season and in the process, moving into the final playoff spot in the OUA.
Friday night, the Lakers slipped past the York Lions, winning 72-71 in Toronto, while on Saturday, the Lakers fell to the McMaster Marauders 82-49 in Hamilton.
In the victory, it was a second half – more specifically a third quarter surge – that gave the Lakers the win.
After being down 26-15 after the opening 10 minutes and 40-35 at halftime, Nipissing put up a huge third to pull ahead.
The Lakers outscored York 26-9 in the third to grab the lead.
Up 61-49 after three, the Lakers held on despite being outscored 22-11 in the fourth to claim the one point win.
Krystal Osburn posted 23 points and 10 rebounds,
Nicole Budd had 18 points,
Megan McCarter chipped in with 12 and
Kylea Galipeau-Wilson had 10 in the win.
The following night, a slow start hurt Nipissing's chances, as they trailed 43-28 at the halftime break.
McMaster took control of the game and sealed the win with a monster third quarter, putting up 26 points and pulling ahead 68-38.
A low scoring fourth didn't change the outcome as the Lakers fell short in the second game of the weekend.
Leading the way on offence for the Lakers was McCarter, scoring 14 points, while Budd added 10 in the contest.
Next up, Nipissing welcomes the Lakehead Thunderwolves to the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
Game time is set for 6pm Saturday night.
