Box Score It was a perfect start to the second half of the season for the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team.
The Lakers hit the road to begin the 2023 portion of the season and put in a solid effort, walking away with a 56-45 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Lakers jumped out to a big lead in the opening quarter, dominating the first 10 minutes of the game.
Up 23-6 after one, the offence cooled down in the second quarter, but the Lakers still managed to take a 32-16 lead into the halftime break.
Nipissing extended their lead after three quarters, outscoring the Thunderbirds 12-8 in the third, which led to a 44-24 advantage after 30 minutes of play.
Algoma poured it on in the fourth, winning the quarter 21-12, but the Lakers hung on for the win – their third of the season.
Krystal Osburn led the way for the Lakers with 18 points and 15 rebounds,
Nicole Budd had 14 points and
Sophie Milner added 12 points and 10 rebounds in the victory.
Nipissing will remain on the road, taking on the York Lions and McMaster Marauders next weekend.
