The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team had a strong weekend, picking up a big win and hanging in with the division's third place team.
The Lakers defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 9-3 Saturday in Toronto before falling 8-7 Sunday against the Laurier Golden Hawks.
In Saturday's victory, the Lakers jumped out to a 3-1 after the opening quarter, but the Blues stormed back to tie the game before the halftime break.
With the score tied 3-3 heading into the second half, it was all Nipissing, as they scored six goals in the second half – three in each quarter – to walk away with the victory.
Dalton King and
Myles Shorey each had a hat-trick, while
Kaleb Fulkerson,
Carter Tait and
Connor Nevin all added singles in the win.
In Sunday's contest, the teams played an even first quarter, each scoring twice.
The Lakers took advantage ahead of the halftime break, outscoring Laurier 3-2 in the second quarter and led 5-4 at the break.
Laurier fought back in the third, tying the game and sending the teams to the fourth and final quarter tied 6-6.
A tight fourth saw the Golden Hawks sneak out the win, scoring a pair of goals, while the Lakers managed just a single.
Jesse Ashkewe and Shorey each scored twice, while King added a goal and an assist in the contest.
Up next, the Lakers head to Sudbury to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs Sunday afternoon.
