Box Score With the final weekend of the regular season here, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team still had a lot to play for.
With a playoff spot wrapped up, positioning was the only thing to be decided, with a number of possibilities still on the table.
In their second-to-last game of the year, the Lakers welcomed the undefeated Ottawa Gee Gees to North Bay for a showdown.
The Lakers fell short, dropping a one goal decision, 2-1, to the Gee Gees.
In the first half, the teams traded possession, with neither team putting much pressure on the opposition in terms of scoring chances.
The Lakers held a slight edge, 3-1, in attempts on goal, with each team recording one official shot.
In the second half, both teams were able to get their offence going.
The Gee Gees struck first, scoring seven minutes into the half.
That goal was quickly followed by another less than 10 minutes later, as Ottawa doubled their lead just a minute past the hour mark of the game.
Nipissing responded, cutting into the deficit six minutes later.
Avery Cafaro cut in off the wing and made no mistake, firing a shot to the bottom corner of the net to pull the Lakers within a goal.
Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, with the Gee Gees hanging on for the win and three points.
Next up, the Lakers host another undefeated team, the Queen's Gaels.
Kickoff is set for noon Sunday as Nipissing wraps up the year and prepares for the OUA post-season.
