Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team had an up and down weekend.
The team hit the road for a pair of games and finished with a split – a 6-1 loss to the Guelph Gryphons and a 5-0 win over the Brock Badgers.
In the first game, despite scoring the opening goal, the game got away from Nipissing.
Abby Lunney found the back of the net just before the midway part of the first period, setup by
Tessa Kosec to give the Lakers a one goal lead.
Guelph would tie the game late in the period – the first of six straight goals.
With the score 1-1 in the second, the Gryphons scored four goal and added another in the third to seal the win.
In the second game of the weekend, the Lakers bounced back in a big way.
Nipissing scored in every period on their way to a shutout victory.
Kosec scored what turned out to be the game-winner in the first period.
Katie Chomiak buried a power play marker in the second and
Emma Neff added another goal late in the middle period.
Another power play goal, this time from
Malory Dominico, put the Lakers up 4-0 midway through the third.
Madison Laberge capped off the scoring with less than a minute to go in the game to make the final 5-0.
Maggie McKee earned three assists, Chomiak and Kosec added helpers for two-point efforts, Lunney,
Megan Hayhurst and
Lana Duriez also grabbed assists in the contest.
Chantelle Sandquist recorded the shutout win, making all 13 saves, while the Lakers peppered the Brock net with 41 shots of their own.
The Lakers return home for two games this weekend, as they host the Queen's Gaels Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 5pm, both at Memorial Gardens.
