Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team continued their strong start to the season with a productive road trip.
The Lakers earned three of four points, falling 2-1 in a shootout Friday night to the Waterloo Warriors before topping the Laurier Golden Hawks 3-1 Saturday night to wrap up the weekend.
Friday, the Lakers opened up the scoring late in the first period as veteran defenceman
Devyn Mayea found the back of the net for his first of the year.
Charler Farmer and
Elias Lieffers earned assists on the goal.
Waterloo tied the game in the third period and with nothing settled in overtime, the teams headed to a shootout.
The Warriors managed to score twice, while the Lakers were held scoreless, giving Laurier the extra point.
Zach Roy finished with 25 saves, while Nipissing fired 33 shots at the Waterloo net.
Saturday, the Lakers made sure they finished the weekend in style, scoring a goal in each period on their way to a win.
Payton Vescio got things going in the first, scoring at the midway mark of the period.
Harrison Caines and Farmer drew assists on the game's opening tally.
Captain
Parker Bowman put Nipissing up 2-0 in the second period, with Mayea completing a multi-point weekend, setting up Bowman.
Laurier would climb within one near the midway mark of the third period, but an empty-net goal by Caines put the game away for the Lakers.
Farmer grabbed his third assist of the weekend on the final goal.
Reece Proulx made it two wins in a row, turning aside 31 shots, with the Lakers replying with 33 of their own.
Next up, the Lakers road trip continues as they head to Kingston to take on the Queen's Gaels Friday night and the RMC Paladins Saturday afternoon.
