Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team hit the road for their first two games of the regular season this past weekend.
The Lakers began the weekend with a tough 82-51 loss to the Queen's Gaels, but bounced back to defeat the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 71-54 Sunday afternoon.
Heading into their home opener this weekend, the Lakers are 1-1 after the first pair of games.
In the weekend's first game Saturday night, the Lakers kept pace early on with the Gaels, trailing 21-13 after the first quarter and 42-26 at the halftime break.
Unfortunately, Queen's pulled away in the third and fourth, outscoring Nipissing 23-17 and capping the game off with a strong fourth, edging the Lakers 17-8 to grab the win.
Leading the way for the Lakers were
Sophie Milner, scoring 22 points and
Taryn Gauthier, who added 11 points.
The Lakers bounced back nicely the next day, getting past the Ridgebacks thanks to a balanced attack.
A great start saw the Lakers jump out to a 22-11 lead after one and extend their advantage to 39-20 at halftime.
Ontario Tech fought back in the third, closing the gap, but a strong finish secured the win for the Lakers, earning them a weekend split.
Milner led the way again with a monster effort, scoring 18 points and adding 20 rebounds.
Megan McCarter had a double-double as well, scoring 15 points and adding 11 rebounds, while Gauthier and Dominque Bouchard each chipped in with 14 points for Nipissing.
Next up, the Lakers will host the Ridgebacks and Gales this weekend.
Friday's tip-off is set for 6pm against Ontario Tech, while Saturday's contest starts at 4pm against Queen's.
Both games are at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
