Box Score With only a few games left on the schedule before the post-season, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team faced a big test this weekend.
The Lakers played host to the division-leading and nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues Friday night in the first of two meetings on the weekend.
Nipissing certainly made it interesting, but came away with a huge 2-1 win in overtime to edge the Blues.
There wasn't much in the way of offence through the first 50 minutes of the game.
Toronto scored the lone goal through two periods, finding the back of the net at the 14:58 mark of the middle frame.
The Lakers decided to save their best for last – literally.
After 59 minutes and 59 seconds of not being able to find the back of the net, Nipissing tied the game with one second left on the clock in the third, sending the game into overtime.
Katie Chomiak earned her 11th of the year with the last second dramatics.
In the extra frame, it was once again Chomiak finding the back of the net, as the Lakers completed an unlikely comeback and overtime win.
Chloe Marshall got the call for the Lakers and finished with 21 saves, while Nipissing had 30 shots of their own.
The teams are back on the ice at Memorial Gardens Saturday night.
Puck drop is set for 7pm.
