Box Score As they head into the playoffs, beginning Wednesday, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team is looking to finish the regular season strong.
The Lakers hosted the Waterloo Warriors in their regular season home finale Friday night at Memorial Gardens.
Unfortunately for Nipissing, the Warriors spoiled the part, coming away with a 4-2 win over the Lakers.
Just past the midway point of the opening period, the Lakers opened up the scoring.
After a few good chance, Nipissing capitalized, with
Lana Duriez potting her seventh of the season, with
Maria Dominico and
Allison Hayhurst drawing assists.
Nipissing ended the opening 20 minutes up 1-0, however, shots favoured Waterloo 11-5.
Almost exactly at the midway point, the Warriors tied the game thanks to a power play marker.
About three minutes later, Waterloo took the lead, going up 2-1 with 5:53 left in the middle frame.
Waterloo added to their lead, going up 3-1 late in the second period, burying their third goal of the frame.
The Warriors scored their fourth straight goal, going up 4-1 at the 6:05 mark of the third period, putting the pressure on the Lakers to stage a late game comeback.
Maddison Stitt pulled the Lakers within two goals, scoring with 37 seconds left in the third period.
Stitt's goal was as close as the Lakers would get, falling by two to Waterloo.
Chole Marshall finished with 23 saves, while Nipissing had 29 shots of their own.
Prior to puck drop, Nipissing honored four senior student-athletes prior to puck drop, recognizing them for the contributions to the program during their time at Nipissing.
The Lakers wrap up the regular season Saturday on the road, taking on Ontario Tech in Oshawa at 7pm.
