Box Score As they cap off a competitive season with a lot of changes, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team was looking to finish on a positive note.
The Lakers played host to the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks Saturday night in their season finale.
Nipissing put together a strong four quarters as they earned a 79-66 win over the Ridgebacks to send the seniors, as well as the fans, into the off-season with a victory.
Ontario Tech jumped out to a quick start, building up an early 13-6 lead through about half the first quarter.
Nipissing picked up their pace in the second half of the quarter, closing the gap and outscoring the Ridgebacks 11-5 down the stretch, but still trailed by one after 10 minutes of play.
In the second quarter, the Lakers took control and took the lead.
They outscored the Ridgebacks 25-15 to grab the advantage as they headed into the halftime break leading 42-33.
In the third, both teams clamped down defensively and limited offensive pressure.
It took a while for the offence to get going, but when it did, the teams traded leads with Ontario Tech surging to the advantage before Nipissing responded.
After three quarters, thanks to their strong finish, the Lakers lead 58-44.
Ontario Tech began to close the gap in the early part of the fourth quarter, outscoring Nipissing 15-10 through five minutes of play.
A late surge pushed the Lakers back in front, keeping their lead and extending it late in the quarter.
Overall, Nipissing posted 23 points as they earned a big win and ended the season on a high note.
Nicole Budd had 19 points,
Megan McCarter had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds,
Natalie Martinez posted 14 and
Krystal Osburn added 10 in the victory.
