Box Score Looking to begin a new winning streak, the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team was back at it Friday night at home.
The Lakers took on the visiting York Lions at Memorial Gardens in the first half of a home-and-home set, as the teams travel to Toronto for an afternoon matchup Saturday.
After erasing two one-goal deficits, the Lakers came away with a hard-fought 3-2 overtime win over the Lions, as Nipissing fired 50 shots at the York net.
The Lions scored the lone goal of the first early in the period, taking a 1-0 lead into the intermission break, despite the Lakers holding an advantage in the shots on goal department.
Nipissing tied the game less than a minute into the second period as
Maggie McKee scored her fifth of the season, with
Malory Dominico drawing the lone assist.
York would regain the lead less than a minute later, making it 2-1, as Nipissing trailed for the second time.
Late in the period, on the power play,
Kara Den Hoed continued her strong campaign finding the back of the net for the sixth time this season.
Ashlyn Zaharia grabbed the lone assist on the second Nipissing goal of the night.
That did it for the scoring in regulation time, as both teams kept the puck out of their net in the third period as the game headed to overtime with the score still reading 2-2.
In the extra period, on the power play,
Katie Chomiak continued her outstanding season, securing the extra point for Nipissing, snapping home her 12th of the season to win it for the Lakers.
Madison Laberge grabbed the helper on the game-winner.
Jordan Sladics was between the pipes for the Lakes, making her first OUA start.
She finished with 26 saves, while Nipissing was all over the Lions, firing 50 shots at the York net.
The two teams will hit the road and head to Toronto to wrap up the weekend Saturday afternoon.
Puck drop is set for 4:15pm.
