Box Score In their first of two key home games this weekend, the Nipissing Lakers men's basketball team welcomed the Western Mustangs to the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
After starting 2024 on the road for three games, the Lakers hit their home court looking for the first win of the new year.
One of the best starts of the year, along with a solid half wasn't enough for the Lakers, as they weren't able to secure the victory, falling 100-74.
Nipissing got off to an impressive start, jumping out to a solid lead and taking a 22-18 advantage into the first quarter break.
A great start to the second quarter saw them score 15 unanswered points to go up 33-18.
The Lakers slowed down as Western picked things up as they fought back, outscoring Nipissing 19-5 to close out the half.
After 20 minutes of play, the Lakers held a 38-37 lead.
In a high scoring third quarter, the Mustangs took over and grabbed the lead, posting 31 points in the frame.
Nipissing managed 23, but found themselves down seven after three.
The Mustangs continued to control the game, extending their lead and basically putting the game away midway through the fourth.
They finished off the game with 32 points in the final quarter, while the Lakers managed just 13, as they were unable to mount a comeback late.
Alex Blackmore had a big game, posting 24 points for the Lakers, while
Marcus Moore added 16 and
Alvin Icyogere had 14 in the contest.
The Lakers are back in action Saturday night, hosting the Lancers in the annual Shoot For Change Anti-Racism game.
Tip-off is set for 8pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
