WOMEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS DROP A TIGHT CONTEST IN OVERTIME

Box Score In a showdown of the top two teams in the OUA, Friday night's game was a big one.

The Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team hosted the Guelph Gryphons, as the two teams are vying for top spot in the league and the season comes down to the wire.

In a tight contest, showcasing the talent of two of Canada's best programs, it was the Gryphons who escaped Memorial Gardens with a win, edging the Lakers 2-1 in overtime.

There wasn't much to report in the way of offence through the opening two periods, as the teams combined for a pair of games – one each.

The Gryphons opened the scoring in the first and took a one goal advantage into the intermission.

Malory Dominico tied the game with her 12th of the season early in the second, tying the game 1-1.

Maggie McKee and Madison Laberge grabbed assists on Dominico's tally.

After Dominico's goal, there was no further scoring as the teams wrapped up the third period and headed to overtime, all knotted up at 1-1.

After successfully killing off one penalty in the extra frame, the Lakers were unable to escape a second, as the Gryphons scored the game-winner with the advantage, claiming the victory.

Nipissing is back in action Saturday night when they host the Brock Badgers.

Game time is 5pm at Memorial Gardens.
