WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LAKERS FALL IN HOME FINALE TO GUELPH

Box Score Beginning their final weekend of play, the Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team faced a tough schedule.

The Lakers played host to the Guelph Gryphons Friday night, before wrapping up the season Saturday against the Brock Badgers, in St. Catharines.

In their final home game of the year Friday, the Lakers fell behind early and were unable to recover, dropping a 85-51 decision to the Gryphons.

Guelph came out strong, grabbing an early 10-5 lead midway through the opening quarter.

They more than doubled their lead as they headed into the first quarter break, building on their advantage and closing out the first, up 21-10.

In the second, Nipissing did manage to close the gap slightly, down nine – 31-22 – at the halfway point of the second.

A push late saw the Gryphons outscore the Lakers 10-6 and take a 41-28 lead into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, Guelph continued to stay in control and out in front, as they built a lead of 20 points, ahead 55-35 at the midway mark of the frame.

Another strong push towards the end of the third saw the Lakers finish the third quarter, down 69-40.

In the fourth, the Lakers improved defensively, surrendering a game-low 16 points, but the deficit was too much to come back from, as they dropped their final home game of the season.

Taryn Gauthier led the Lakers with 14 points, while Sophie Milner added 10 in the contest.

Nipissing takes on Brock Saturday night, with tip-off set for 6pm.
