North Bay, ON – Nipissing Men's Hockey had a tough weekend at home, dropping two games against the Carleton Ravens and Ontario Tech Ridgebacks, respectively.
Friday, January 16th, the Lakers welcomes the Ravens to Boart Longyear Memorial Gardens. Carleton opened the scoring at 6:46 in the first period on the power play. Nipissing tied the game at one courtesy of a Kyle Foreman goal scored at 7:21. Noah Vom Scheidt and Kyle McGuire picked up assists on the goal. Shots were 15-12 for Carleton in the first period, as the score remained tied at one after one.
Carleton regained their lead at 4:39 of the second period as Felix Bedard gave the Ravens a 2-1 advantage. Nipissing tied the game once again at 9:01 as Noah Vom Scheidt scored his 12th goal of the season, this a power play tally. Charlie Johnson and Kyle Foreman scored assists on the goal. Carleton would again take the lead at 14:35 of the second, as Robbie Rutledge scored to give the Ravens a 3-2 lead. The score would remain there after 40 minutes. Shots in the second were 13-9 for Nipissing.
Carleton would score at 10:54 of the third period to take the game's first two goal lead at 4-2. Nipissing would fight hard to get on the board once again, but Carleton added an empty net goal at 18:13 to secure a 5-2 win over the Lakers.
Lakers netminder Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 32 of 36 Ravens shots in the loss. Shots in the game ended at 39 for the Lakers and 37 for the Ravens.
Then, on Saturday, January 17th, the Lakers looked to right the ship and get back into the win column with a matchup against Ontario Tech for Military Appreciation Night.
This game was played in support of the North Bay Military Family Resource Centre.
Ontario Tech scored the first goal of the game at 14:57 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The Ridgebacks would add a second goal at 19:11 on the power play, taking a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Shots were 10-8 for Ontario Tech.
The second saw only one goal, as Nipissing got on the board at 9:48 on the power play. David Campbell tipped home Reilly Mayne's shot from the point, and the Lakers pulled to within a goal of the lead. Shots in the period were 12-5 for Nipissing, as the Lakers had opportunities to tie the game on the power play, but could not convert.
The third period saw Ontario Tech jump to a 4-1 lead before the 10-minute mark, as the Ridgebacks buried goals at 2:49 and 7:33.
The Lakers fought hard and clawed their way back into the game as Noah Vom Scheidt scored his 13th of the season at 11:41. Nipissing continued to push, and David Campbell scored his second goal of the game, this one a power play tally, to get the Lakers to within a goal of tying the game. Campbell's goal was unassisted.
With a pulled goaltender and extra-attacker, the Lakers skated 6 on 5 and tried hard to tie the game. Ontario Tech sealed a 5-3 win with an empty-net goal at 18:44.
Lakers goalie Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 17 of 21 shots in the loss.
The losses move MHKY to 9-8-3 on the season.
Men's Hockey is back on the road next weekend, once again travelling to Trois-Rivieres, QC for a matchup with UQTR on Friday, January 23rd at 7PM. Then, Saturday, January 24th, the Lakers will be in Montreal to face the McGill Redbirds at 3PM.
