Sault Ste. Marie, ON – The Nipissing Lakers Nordic Ski team wrapped up a successful trip to the Soo this past weekend.
Saturday, January 17th was the 2-person 800m twice skate team sprint. Nipissing started five varsity teams, including three on the men's side and two on the women's.
The Lakers Men's teams swept the podium in this race, with Nathan Golisky/Morgan Young finishing 1st, Eily Woodman/Ewan Pengra coming in 2nd, and George Legler/Oliver Czerny-Holownia placing 3rd.
The two Lakers Women's teams finished 1st (Mia Smith/Sean'Hope Craig), and 2nd (Brooke and Charlotte Ailey).
Then, Sunday, Jan. 18th, a 10km classic interval start race was held seeing competitors ski two laps of a 5km course. The Lakers once again swept the Men's podium, with Ewan Pengra finishing 1st (29:11), Nathan Golisky at 2nd (29:44), and Eily Woodman in 3rd (29:57). Morgan Young finished 4th (31:37), Oliver Czerny-Holownia 5th (33:09.2), George Legler 8th (34:01.8), and Micah Peake 10th (35:55.6).
On the Women's side, Brooke Ailey scored another podium finish at 2nd place (35:43.1), while Sean'Hope Craig finished 3rd (37:12.5) and Alieya Pires finished 4th (38:47.1)
"It was a good weekend for the team, competing against our northern rival Laurentian" Nipissing Nordic Ski Head Coach Toivo Koivukoski said about last weekend's results.
"Lakers skiers were pumped up by their podium sweeps and had a good competitive dynamic going within the team. The depth of our teams developing this season meant that race finish orders on the team were up for grabs; This pushed the skiers onward" said Koivukoski.
Nipissing Nordic is back in action Jan. 29 - Feb 1 at the Nordiq Canada World Junior/U23 Trials & Western Championships in Canmore, Alberta.
