North Bay, ON – Nipissing Men's Volleyball scored a big 3-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors at home on Friday, Feb. 6.
In the first, Nipissing led 12-8 before Waterloo battled back to cut the lead to one point. Nipissing rallied, taking six of the next eight points to lead 18-12. After trading points with Waterloo, the Lakers scored three in a row to take the first set 25-17.
The second set saw a tie game early as both sides settled into play. Nipissing scored three points in a row to lead 8-5. Waterloo battled back and tied the game at 10. The Lakers took five of the next six to lead 15-11, then 16-12. The teams again traded points before Nipissing eventually scored three of four and led 21-16. Waterloo climbed back into action, scoring four of six points to cut the Laker lead to two. NIpissing sealed the set with a Justice Smith kill, winning 25-22 and leading 2-0.
The Warriors got started early in the third, leading 8-4 and 10-5 quickly. The Warriors took seven of the next eleven points to lead 17-8. The lead grew to 20-9 before the Lakers battled back and scored five points to cut into Waterloo's lead. The Warriors took the set 25-15.
The fourth set saw a quick 4-0 Laker lead that turned into a 7-3 advantage soon after. 11-6 was the score before it became 16-10 for Nipissing. The teams again traded points before Nipissing scored three of five to lead 21-16. Nipissing maintained their lead well and managed to close the set 25-18 and win the match 3-1.
Marc Marchand led Nipissing with 14 kills, 2 service aces and 5 digs. Zander Kasunich scored 8 kills and added 1 service ace and 5 digs. Justice Smith scored 7 kills and added 1 service ace and 1 dig. Jack Svendsen scored 33 assists and 8 digs. Taydon Shantz scored 5 kills and added 9 digs and 1 block.
The win moves Nipissing to 10-9 this season.
