In any hockey league, in order to win, you typically need good goaltending, strong special teams and the ability to capitlize on the chances you get.
The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team can put a check mark beside each of those after last night's big 3-2 come-from-behind win over the number four ranked team in the CIS, the McGill Redmen.
The Lakers scored three power play goals in the third period and got a 39 save effort from goalie
Domenic Graham on their way to the team's first victory of the season.
Early in the game, it was Graham who was the difference, as he made 18 saves in the first period and kept the Redmen off the board and gave the Lakers a chance to get their legs under them.
After the first period, the Lakers actually outshot the Redmen, but it was McGill who opened up the scoring in the second perid, right around the midway point.
The shots were 27-19 in favour of McGill after 40 minutes, but the score was just 1-0.
In the third frame, in the span of less than five minutes, Nipissing scored three straight power play goals to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
Erik Robichaud,
Jim McDowell and
Chad Thibodeau all found the back of the net while Graham continued to baffle the Redmen shooters.
McDowell and Robichaud each finished the game with two points - a goal and an assist.
The Redmen would get one back late in the game to cut the lead to one, but Nipissing would hold on for their first win of the season to go with two overtime losses.
Nipissing finished 3-for-6 on the power play and a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, a big reason they came away with the two points.
The Lakers are in action Sunday in Kingston, facing the RMC Paladins, the same team that defeated Nipissing on Oct. 3 to kick off the 2015-16 OUA hockey season.
