A day after a great comeback win, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey needed some more heroics to secure a perfect 2-0 weekend.
Saturday evening, the Lakers scored three straight goals to pick up a 3-2 win over the McGill Redmen, the number four ranked team in the CIS and Sunday, they pulled off a 4-3 overtime victory over the always tough RMC Paladins.
Despite outshooting the Paladins 45-19, it took a game-tying goal by
Dylan Staples with 40 seconds left to force overtime, and a game-winner by
Craig Campbell for Nipissing to earn the two points.
For the second straight game,
Jimmy McDowell found the back of the net, scoring just past the midway point of the first period.
Staples drew the lone assist, his first of two points on the night.
RMC responded with two goals in the middle frame, one on the power play, taking a 2-1 lead into the third period.
Early in the third,
Jacob Conrad tied the game as the Lakers put on tonnes of pressure, eventually outshooting RMC 16-7 in the final period.
Mitch McNeill and Campbell earned helpers on the goal.
With just under three minutes to go, the Paladins re-took the lead and seem to be on their way to another upset victory over the Lakers.
But before they could celebrate, Staples found the back of the net in the dying seconds to even the game and send it to overtime.
Dale Deon and
Guillaume Naud, with his first of two assists, set up Staples' game-tying tally.
Near the halfway point of the extra frame, Campbell scored to give the Lakers the victory and the full two points.
Brendan Mitchell and Naud were in on the winner.
Graham improved his record to 2-0-2, making a combined 55 saves over the two games.
The Lakers are 2-0-2 through four games this year which puts them tied for first place in the East Division.
McGill and UQTR, along with the Lakers, all have six points through four contests in 2015-16.
Nipissing is back in action this weekend when they travel to Brock (0-3-1) for a game Friday and York (2-0-1) for a matchup with the Lions Saturday.
