It took a long road trip and more than 60 minutes, but the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team snapped their four game winless streak Friday night.
The Lakers trailed by one goal three different times, but fought back every time and capped things off with an overtime winning by
Mackenzie Keirstead to claim the extra point and the win.
After starting the year 2-0-2, the Lakers hit a bit of a speed bump, going 0-3-1 in their past four before the win over the Thunderwolves.
After a scoreless opening period, the teams combined for four goals and 28 shots in the middle frame.
Lakehead opened up the scoring just before the 10-minute mark, but that lead would only last about three minutes.
Erik Robichaud continued his strong play early in the year, as he tied the game up, with assists going to
Colin Campbell and
Chad Thibodeau.
A minute later, the Thunderwolves would regain the lead and put themselves up 2-1, but once again, the advantage wouldn't last long, as the Lakers would reply.
Campell would pick up his second point of the game, scoring to tie things up again with less than four minutes remaining in the period.
Sam Gleason earned the first assist, while Thibodeau picked up the additional helper.
The teams would once again trade goals in the final period, as Lakehead, for the third time, grabbed the lead early in the frame on the power play.
It took longer than they would have liked, but Nipissing replied with a power play marker of their own.
Brock Morrison found the back of the net, with
Craig Campbell drawing the assist, as the teams would finish regulation time knotted up at 3-3.
Less than a minute into the extra period, Keirstead ended the game and gave the Lakers the extra point.
Guillaume Naud grabbed the assist on the winning goal.
Kirk Rafuse picked up the victory, making 30 saves in goal, as the final shots favoured Nipissing, 37-33.
The same two teams are back at it Saturday night at 7 p.m. with the Lakers (3-3-3) looking to sweep their road trip and Lakehead (0-6-1) still searching for their first win of the 2015-16 campaign.
