Sunday, the Nipissing Lakers soccer teams hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues on homefield, looking to finish the weekend off with a bang.
Coming off a win, the women's team was hoping to make it two in a row, which would put themselves near the top of the standings almost halfway through the season.
The men, on the other hand, were looking to bounce back after a loss to Ryerson Saturday.
Women's Soccer Makes it Two in a Row
While it was far from a bad start at home for the Lakers women's soccer team, things may have turned around thanks to an impressive weekend at home.
Playing their first two games in North Bay, the Lakers came up big, defeating both Ryerson and on Sunday, they capped off a perfect weekend by topping Toronto.
It was an intense battle, with both teams playing a physical style and things came right down to the end and created some tense moments.
For the second straight game, Kristen Farkas scored an early goal to get things going for Nipissing.
The second year striker already has four goals this season in just six games.
The Lakers went up 2-0 when Andrea Young was hauled down in the crease setting up a penalty kick. Selena Innamorati stepped up to take the shot and made no mistake, firing the ball off the bar and in to give Nipissing a two goal lead.
With the score 2-0, Carlee Bennard made a huge save diving to her left.
Toronto would get one back late, breaking Bennard's shutout, scoring in the 81st minute, but that was as close as they would come.
Nipissing locked things down from there and sealed up their third win of the year and second in a row.
With two more home games next weekend, the Lakers will look to continue their strong play.
They host Ottawa on Saturday and Carleton on Sunday, kicking off both games at noon at Nipissing University.
Men's Soccer earns a point against powerful Blues
Coming off a tough loss to Ryerson Saturday afternoon, the Lakers were unable to bounce back the way they wanted against Toronto.
They were able to grab a point, earning a 0-0 draw, but came up short of the full three points.
Grainger Munro was solid in net, as he finished with seven saves for the clean sheet.
It may have not been a win, but there are positives to build on and they're going to take that into training this week as they prepare for their lone game next weekend against Carleton Ravens.
Nipissing hosts the Ravens Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on campus at Nipissing University.
