The Nipissing Lakers soccer teams wrapped up a long homestand with a matchup against the Carleton Ravens at the Education Field Sunday afternoon.
The women's team was coming off a loss to the Ottawa Gee Gees, despite a great effort and the men's team was playing its lone game of the weekend
The teams will play Laurentian on the road next game before hosting the Voyageurs on Sept. 30
Women's Soccer grounds the RavensIf the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team was feeling down about a tough one goal loss Saturday, it sure didn't show Sunday.
The Lakers, coming off a 2-1 loss to Ottawa, bounced back in a big way, defeating the Carleton Ravens 2-0 at the Education Centre Field.
The Lakers put together a great effort in every facet of the game – surrendering very few chances, creating a tonne of their own and closing down the attacking Ravens quickly and efficiently.
Defensively and in goal, the Lakers were rock solid.
Carlee Bennard earned the clean sheet and while she wasn't very busy, she was good when she had to be.
Offensively, the Lakers continued to create a number of chances and found the back of the net in the 15 th minute when
Emma Persi tapped in a ball that was sitting on the goal line.
The tally was Persi's second of the season.
The Lakers padded their lead early in the second half when
Andrea Young, who made a slick move around the defender and the goalie, firing home her first OUA goal.
While the Ravens attempted to mount a comeback, Nipissing tightened up defensively and shut things down for the final 30 minutes to secure the three points.
Winners of three of their last four, the Lakers (4-3-1) are currently tied for third place with their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs (4-3-1), who they will face in a home-and-home coming up.
The first matchup of the two teams is Saturday in Sudbury, before the teams play the return game in North Bay on Sept. 30
Men's Soccer battle Carleton to a drawWith just one game on the schedule for the Lakers, it was chance for them to catch a Ravens team that played an intense game in Sudbury the day before.
While Nipissing put together a solid effort, the goaltenders and defence were the story of the day for both squads, as the teams played to a hard fought 0-0 draw.
Grainger Munro now has back-to-back clean sheets, as he made three official saves, but had to deal with pressure around the 18-yard box all afternoon.
The Lakers fired five official shots at the Ravens net, but definitely had the advantage when it came to scoring chances.
Nipissing now sits with a 1-2-3 record and will look to get back on the winning track with a pair of games against Laurentian on the horizon.
The teams face each other Saturday in Sudbury before battling in North Bay on Sept. 30.
