The Nipissing Lakers lacrosse team picked a perfect time to pick up a huge win.
The Lakers got off to a great start, building up a 3-0 lead and a 5-2 advantage at halftime and thanks a gigantic fourth quarter, picked up a 15-7 victory over Ottawa Friday night at home.
The win puts the Lakers into fourth place in the East Division and sets up a big showdown this weekend against Bishops, with one of the two teams grabbing home field for the playoffs, where they're likely face each other.
Nipissing currently holds a 4-6 record and has won two straight, as they hope to continue their strong play as the playoffs approach.
It was a complete team effort and a number of players stood out, but
Scott Dominey and
Nick Chaykowsky took their game to another level, especially in the fourth quarter.
The two combined for eight goals and 13 points – Chaykowsky had three goals and four assists, while Dominey had five goals and one helper – and Nipissing scored nine straight goals, all in the fourth quarter, to pick up the victory.
After having the lead for the whole game, a third quarter push put Ottawa ahead going into the final quarter.
After entering the third with a 5-2 lead, the Lakers found themselves down 7-6 and needed a big final quarter to grab the win and two points.
That's when Chaykowsky and Dominey took over.
Alex DeGagne had three goals and an assist,
Doug Utting and
Daniel Miziolek added two goals apiece, as well.
Thanks to the victory, the Lakers moved into fourth place, clinching the team's first ever playoff positions. And now Nipissing is just two points behind Bishops for third and homefield in the post-season.
The two will play a pair of games this weekend, Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at noon.
