While they couldn't actually improve their positioning in the standings, that didn't stop the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team from coming up with an impressive effort on the road.
The Lakers earned a 3-2 double-overtime win over the Queens Gaels last night in Kingston, coming back from one goal deficits twice to claim the two points.
Queens opened the scoring in the first on a power play and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
The teams traded goals in the second, with
Joel Herbert tying the game for Nipissing, scoring his fifth of the season.
Craig Campbell earned the only helper on the goal.
The Gaels would replay, however, regaining the lead later in the period and once again held a one goal lead at the intermission.
Brock Morrison tied the game in the third with just over five minutes left in the game – a goal set up by
Dale Deon and
Erik Robichaud.
The shots were 39-29 in favour of the Gaels after 60 minutes of play.
In the first overtime period, the Lakers peppered the Queens net, firing seven shots in just five minutes of play, but failed to convert, as the game entered a second overtime period.
Nipissing outshot the Gaels 3-2 in the second extra frame – and 10-3 overall – and finally found the back of the net, as
Colin Campbell continued his strong season, scoring about midway through the period to give Nipissing the extra point.
Robichaud picked up his second point of the game, grabbing the assist on the game-winner.
The goal was Campbell's 12th of the year and third game-winner.
Domenic Graham was good and busy in net, making a total of 40 saves on 42 shots to grab the victory.
Graham's .952 save percentage in the win was the seventh time he has recorded a save percentage better than .933.
The Lakers close out their regular season with a game against UOIT tonight at 7:30 in Oshawa.
