It's the first real speed bump in an otherwise extremely impressive season so far for the Nipissing Lakers men's volleyball team.
The Lakers suffered their second and third losses of the season, and first losing streak, after falling to the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 Saturday and Guelph Gryphons 3-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers started the weekend off strong, winning 25-22 in the opening set against Waterloo, but fell three straight times – 25-14, 25-23 and 25-19 to close out the match.
After that loss, the Lakers fell to 8-2 on the season.
Cam Branch had 17 kills for the Lakers, while
Warren Taylor added nine and
Jack Peckham and Curis MacPherson each had six.
Sunday, Nipissing was unable to take a set off the Gryphons as they dropped the match 3-0, losing 25-21, 25-18 and 25-17.
Lyndon Sonego led the way with 11 kills,
Jack Peckham and
Warren Taylor each had five, as well.
With the pair of losses, the Lakers dropped to second in the division, tied with York and Queens, just two points back of Ryerson.
The Lakers do have games in hand on both Queens and Ryerson, but with the exact same record as York, Saturday's matchup between the two teams at the RJS Athletic Centre will be huge in determining who finishes in the top half of the division.
The playoffs are more than likely, almost a lock at this point, but positioning and the first round matchup are still very wide open.
The Lakers are looking to bounce back and do it in a big way Saturday on their home court.
