After missing the playoffs for the first time in the program's history, which began back in 2009, the Nipissing Lakers are looking to come through with a big 2017-18 season.
The march to return to the playoffs begins tonight with the first of two games versus the UQTR Patriotes – the always powerful team based out of Quebec.
The Lakers will take on the Patriotes Saturday afternoon as well, to wrap up the opening weekend of the season.
The teams split a pair of games last season, with UQTR winning 7-2 on home ice, with the Lakers posting a 3-2 shootout victory at Memorial Gardens.
A new-look lineup gives the Lakers hope as they enter the season.
Returning players like
Danny Desrochers and
Deverick Ottereyes are expected to take a step this year after missing half the season last year injured. Fourth year veteran players such as
Colin Campbell,
Brock Morrison,
Sam Gleason and
Dylan Staples will be key players in determining how the Lakers fair this year.
The goaltending should be solid with the addition of
Brent Moran from the North Bay Battalion and
Domenic Graham returning.
The class of new recruits have made a solid first impression lead by
Brett Hargrave,
Lucas Brown,
Travis McEvoy,
Brody Morris and three transfer players
Jake Wright,
Matt Donnelly and
Tyler Brown.
They will need to contribute regularly for the Lakers to make a splash in a tough East Division.
Game time is set for 7pm tonight and 3pm Saturday afternoon.
Nipissing's home opened is set for next weekend when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks and Waterloo Warriors on Oct. 20 and 21.
Both games will begin at 7:30pm at Memorial Gardens.

Coach's Quote
"We are looking forward to rebounding and again looking to make a playoff appearance. After an injury plagued season where we had up to 10 players injured for some games we are looking to stay healthy this year. Exhibition has been positive, but the Lakers know playing in a very tough East Division every game will be very tough. We are looking forward to bouncing back in every way."
