A short memory is key in sports – forgetting about a tough loss and not resting after a big victory.
The Nipissing Lakers women's basketball team has done a good job of that all season and will need to do it again, as they came out on the wrong end of a 68-24 decision to the ninth ranked, Queens Gaels, Friday night.
The Gaels jumped out to a quick lead and used a strong first half to improve to 10-1, while the Lakers fell to 2-8 despite closing the first half out with a strong push.
The Lakers were slow out of the blocks and trailed 22-6 after 10 minutes, but did improve in the second quarter and closed the gap.
After adding another nine points in the second, the Lakers trailed 36-15 at halftime, but picked up their play considerably.
Unfortunately, the experienced Gaels continued to control the pace and extended their lead early in the third quarter, building up a 42-17 advantage.
From there, they closed out the frame, leading 44-18.
In the fourth, the Lakers refused to quit and show the heart an hustle they have all year, but it was too little and too late, as they lost 68-24
Leading the way on the offence was
Marla Corney with eight and
Devanee Dewey added five.
Nipissing will try to rebound when they face the York Lions Saturday night at the RJS Athletic Centre.
Game time is set for 6pm.
