Box Score 2 The Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team settled for a weekend split in Kingston, but in the process, were able to snap their losing streak.
The Lakers started the weekend off with a key win over the RMC Paladins, defeating them 5-3 Friday night before losing to a strong Queens Gaels team Saturday, by a final of 7-2.
In their win, the Lakers opened up the scoring as
Danny Desrochers continued his strong season finding the back of the net in the first period.
RMC scored twice before the end of the period, taking a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
A big second period put Nipissing in control heading to the final frame.
Erik Campbell,
Brock Morrison and
Colin Campbell all scored, with RMC managing just one goal.
The offensive outburst put the Lakers up 4-3 after 40 minutes.
Colby Tower added a tally in the third period to seal the victory for Nipissing.
Dylan Staples, Morrison and Desrochers all had multi-point game, while
Deverick Ottereyes,
Matt Donnelly each earned an assist in the victory.
Brent Moran finished with 34 saves, while Nipissing fired 40 shots at the RMC net.
In the second game of the weekend, the Gaels struck early and built up a 2-0 lead before the midway point of the opening period.
Erik Robichaud replied for the Lakers with a power play marker, set up by Desrochers and Donnelly.
Down just a goal after one, the Lakers looked to tie things up in the second, but it was Queens who extended their lead, scoring twice to make it 4-1 after 40 minutes.
Down 6-1,
Drake Lindsay found the back of the net to cut into his team's deficit.
Nic Vlahos and Robichaud earned helpers on the goal.
Queens would add another goal less than a minute later to seal their victory.
Moran finished with 43 saves, but was tagged with the loss.
The Lakers are back on home ice for a pair of games this weekend when they host the Concordia Stingers Friday night at the McGill Redmen Saturday.
Both games are set for 7:30pm at Memorial Gardens.
