MEN'S HOCKEY: LAKERS DROP A PAIR TO STRONG DIVISION OPPONENTS

Facing two of the division's stronger teams, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team had a tough road trip this past weekend.

On Friday they were on the wrong side of a 6-2 decision, as they fell to the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa and Saturday, the Concordia Stingers topped the Lakers 7-2 in Montreal.

Friday, Nipissing started strong, leading 1-0 and 2-1 in the first period, but the lead didn't last.

Ben Garagan put Nipissing up 1-0 just 1:15 into the opening period, set up by linemate Danny Desrcohers.

Carleton tied the game five minutes later on a power play before Nipissing took the lead once again, late in the period.

Gael Lubwele restored the Lakers lead with just over four minutes to go in the period.

He buried a power play marker, setup by Drake Lindsay and Desrochers.

Unfortunately, the Ravens scored the next five to pick up the win.

They tied the game before the end of the opening period, sending the teams to the intermission tied 2-2.

Carleton grabbed the lead in the middle frame and led 3-2 after 40 minutes before erupting for three goals in the third to seal the win.

Francis Asselin made 29 saves for the Lakers, who had 30 shots of their own.

In the second game of the weekend, Concordia jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Lakers attempted comeback, scoring twice to cut into the Stingers lead.

That was as close as they would get, however, as Concordia scored the final four goals of the game to earn the victory.

Down 3-0, Matthew Titus found the back of the net to get Nipissing on the board with about five minutes left in the first period.

Before the frame was done, Devyn Mayea buried a power play marker to get Nipissing back in the game.

Desrochers and Colby Tower had the helpers on Mayea's tally.

From there, it was also Stingers.

Concordia scored three times in the second and once in the third to pick up the two points.

Asselin and Talor Joseph both saw time in the net, making a combined 28 saves, while Nipissing had 30 shots for the second straight game.

Next up, the Lakers hit the road to take on McGill Saturday in the first part of a home-and-home series.

The rematch is set for Jan. 31 at Memorial Gardens.
