Box Score In a game with huge playoff implications, in terms of hosting, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team took on the nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday at home.
Coming off a draw Saturday, Nipissing needs to win out and have Carleton lose one of their final three games to ensure homefield for Round 1 of the post-season.
Sunday's showdown went to Nipissing thanks to a dominant effort, winning 6-1.
The Lakers could not have scripted a better first half.
They dominated play, controlled the pace and found the back of the net twice.
Jen Milligan opened up the scoring, making it 1-0 in the 30th minute, thanks to finding a loose ball and burying it in the bottom corner of the net.
Just before the half, the Lakers doubled their lead.
After a handball in the crease, veteran
Rylee Traicoff stepped up and hammered home Nipissing's second goal.
Leading 2-0 after 45 minutes, the Lakers continued to pour it on.
An own goal by Toronto put the Lakers up 3-0 early in the second half and Nipissing didn't stop.
Alanna Delle Monache scored a beauty, cutting to the near post and firing a shot over the keepers' hands into the net to put the Lakers up by four.
Not long after, Milligan scored her second of the game, blasting a shot through the goalkeeper as the route was on.
With the score 5-0 in favour of the Lakers, Toronto answered quickly to break Nipissing's shutout bid.
With about 25 minutes left in the game, a perfect corner gave the Lakers their sixth goal.
Milligan crossed the ball and
Victoria Picanco was on the receiving end, heading the ball into the corner of the net.
From there, the Lakers closed out the final 20 minutes to pick up a huge three points, as they remain in the hunt for homefield in Round 1 of the OUA post-season.
Up next, the Lakers will close out the season against Ontario Tech Saturday, as the Lakers celebrate their senior athletes prior to kickoff.
